🔎 About the conference
This conference seeks to create access to and discussion around Hawai’i’s legacy cache of historical resources that have been reopened and are being cultivated anew. As the 20th century opened, with the great changes that came to Hawai‘i under American control as a Provisional Government, Republic, Territory, and eventually a State, English became dominant in most realms and was the basis for Hawai’i’s history, while the huge Hawaiian-language archive that had been built up during the previous century was largely forgotten. A half-century of language revitalization has brought those resources back into focus, breaking down the assumption of sufficiency that has held sway for more than a century.
That archive documented ancient knowledge, along with the insights and actions occurring during ever-changing times. Letters and government documents began at the advent of native writing in 1822, newspapers were published from 1834 to 1948, and there were abundant books, official documents, letters, personal papers, and journals, where boundless information about Hawai‘i was recorded in Hawaiian. It is amazing that for a relatively small population, Hawai‘i generated such a huge archive—millions of pages worth—and it is unrivaled among native-language knowledge resources of the world. Reintegrating that valuable knowledge is our challenge today.
