In response to a need in the community for access to historical Hawaiian knowledge, Awaiaulu assembled primary source documents, articles from the newspapers, and produced material to understand detail of two events in Hawaiian history. This was called Kīpapa:
- Lā Kūʻokoʻa, November 28, 1843 (Independence Day)
- Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, July 31, 1843 (Restoration Day)
The Awaiaulu team created two strands of curriculum for grade bands K-3, 4-6, 7-8 & 9-12 for a total of two for each grade band per topic. In addition to mele, supplemental reading material and some games to engage youth in these topics. All the materials were presented in Hawaiian and English.
Kīpapa was a success and was closed on 31 December 2020. The Awaiaulu team are working a new section of educator resources for launch in mid 2021. Here is a brief overview video of Kīpapa:
